Plot summary
Cooper is turned down by a special forces unit after he refuses an order from Captain Ryan to shoot a dog, and he rejoins his own squad. Four weeks later he and five other British soldiers are flown into a remote stretch of the Scottish Highlands to take part in an exercise against a Special Air Service unit. The next morning they come upon the camp of the unit they were meant to face, wrecked and with its men dead. Ryan is there, badly wounded, and says only vague things about what attacked them. When the squad pulls back, something unseen comes after it. Sergeant Wells is caught and hurt, and Cooper carries him to a road, where Megan, a zoologist, picks them up.

- Jason Statham was initially cast as Cooper but chose to work with John Carpenter on Ghosts of Mars instead, and Simon Pegg was offered the role of Spoon but had promised Edgar Wright that Shaun of the Dead would be his first film role.
- Production designer Simon Bowles built models of the house so that camera set-ups and the paths characters would run or climb could be planned; only the front portion of the house's exterior was built early on, and that is the only part used in the film.
