Plot summary
Knowledge and power are what Faustus wants, and a doctorate at the University of Wittenberg does not give him enough of either. He turns to necromancy and conjures Mephistopheles out of hell. A pact with Lucifer follows: his soul in return for twenty-four more years of life, with Mephistopheles as his slave. Faustus signs it in his own blood, and the spirit shows him the works of the Devil.

- Doctor Faustus was the first theatrical film version of a Christopher Marlowe play, and the only film ever directed by either Richard Burton or his Oxford University mentor Nevill Coghill.
- Doctor Faustus is a permanent record of the 1966 Oxford University Dramatic Society stage production that Richard Burton starred in and staged with Nevill Coghill; Burton did not appear on stage again until he took over the role of Martin Dysart in Equus on Broadway ten years later.
