Plot summary
Mexico, the 1860s. Emperor Maximilian I rules with Austrian and French forces behind him, while republican bands and Mexican revolutionaries fight to restore former president Benito Juárez. The United States, caught up in its own civil war, stays neutral. The guerrilla leader Señor Ocaño needs weapons, so he hires the gunfighter Sabata to seize a shipment of gold from the imperial army and buy guns with it. Sabata rides with two partners, Escudo and Ballantine, and the transport is guarded by Austrian troops. Against them stands Colonel Skimmel, the Austrian officer in command of the local garrison, who answers to the emperor.
