Plot summary
Dan Starkey drinks and writes a newspaper column when he has the time, and he is not impressed by the promises of Michael Brinn, the former victim of the war who campaigns for disarmament and peace between the factions and looks set to win the coming election. Starkey and Charles Parker, an American journalist, are sent to cover that election. Margaret, a young art student he has been seeing, gives him a tape of classical music; her former boyfriend is Patrick "Cow Pat" Keegan, a feared terrorist. Starkey returns to her apartment with a pizza and finds her bloody and dying.
