Plot summary
On a mountain slope in Katmai National Park and Preserve, a brown bear named Sky gives birth to two cubs, Scout and Amber. When April arrives, the family leaves the den and faces avalanches on the way down. In the lush valley below, the cubs meet other bears: Magnus, a large male who dominates the valley, and Chinook, an older rival. A lone wolf named Tikaani prowls nearby, and Sky keeps the cubs safe from it. As spring wears on, she teaches Scout and Amber to catch food, leading them to the mudflats where clams hide under the mud. The family also stays clear of the fights between Magnus and Chinook.
