Plot summary
Anaïs Bordier is a fashion design student in London when a friend sends her a still from a YouTube video of an American woman who looks exactly like her. She learns the woman is Samantha Futerman, an actor in Los Angeles, that both were born in South Korea on the same day and adopted as babies. Anaïs reaches out through Facebook, and the two exchange messages before arranging their first call over Skype. Confirming the resemblance, they agree to find out whether they are related, and begin comparing their lives and the details of their adoptions to prove whether they are sisters, or twins.

- Twinsters was built on the real story of Anaïs Bordier, a French student in London who was sent a still from a YouTube video, was amazed by the physical similarity of the American woman in it, and weeks later received the trailer for 21 & Over, which featured the same woman.
- Futerman became an adoption advocate with Jenna Ushkowitz, the Glee actress who is also a Korean adoptee, and the two co-founded Kindred: The Foundation for Adoption, an online resource for adoptees seeking travel, support and translation help as they try to reunite with birth families.
