Plot summary
While his grandmother's house sits for sale, thirteen-year-old Lucas explores the bookshelves and comes across a crystal in a box. He keeps it and carries it onto a plane, where he puts it on the empty seat next to him. The crystal glows, disaster strikes, and Lucas is stranded in a strange land of ghost ships and prehistoric creatures. A radio broadcast draws him through the jungle, where he meets Kate, a girl who says she comes from the 1950s. She once possessed a crystal like his and gives him her diary, which she calls a survival guide. Lucas also meets Mimos, a Sinornithosaurus that copies any sound it hears.
