Plot summary
Stephen is a brilliant boy living in Cambridge, England, in a world that seems to be the 1920s. A professor arrives at a garden party, where he asks the children to picture what life would be like for a being of only one or two dimensions, and then explains that other dimensions might be manipulated to make time travel possible. Later, while Stephen, his cousin Conrad and their neighbor Victoria play near a well, Conrad tosses Victoria's skipping rope into it, and she goes down the well after the rope. As Stephen grows into a scientist, he gives himself over to making the professor's theories real, with jealousy, love and greed weighing on his work and his mind.
