Plot summary

Amanda Price is ailing and harsh with the people around her. Her brother Edward lives on the allowance she grants him, and he is impatient for her to die and for the inheritance that would follow. Her attempts to end her own life have been stopped before they took effect. Edward brings Esther Harper into the house to watch over his sister, hoping she will help hasten the old woman's death. Esther is not eager to kill her, and she is curious about what the house conceals.
