Sid Melton

Biography

Sid Melton was an American actor whose career covered roughly 140 film and television projects. Born in Brooklyn, he came from a show business family: his father was a Yiddish theater comedian and his brother a Hollywood screenwriter, and those connections helped him land the part of Fingers in Shadow of the Thin Man (1941). He made his stage debut on a 1939 tour of See My Lawyer and during World War II entertained American soldiers overseas. After signing with Lippert Pictures in 1949, he supplied comic relief in many low-budget movies, including Lost Continent (1951), and appeared in The Steel Helmet (1951), The Lemon Drop Kid, The Geisha Boy (1958), The Tunnel of Love (1958), and Lady Sings the Blues (1972). On television he was Captain Midnight's sidekick Ichabod Mudd, Alf Monroe on Green Acres, Uncle Charlie Halper on The Danny Thomas Show and its spinoffs, and Salvadore Petrillo on The Golden Girls. He directed Bad Girls Do Cry.
