Fred Kohler
Biography
Fred Kohler was an American actor who began in touring vaudeville and became known for playing heavies in silent pictures and early talkies. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He supported himself with other jobs while trying to get into show business, and he eventually joined a traveling company. The Code of Honor, a short from 1911, gave him his first screen role, followed by an uncredited bit in Joan the Woman (1917), a Cecil B. DeMille feature. Regular parts did not come until The Tiger's Trail (1919). His stern looks made him a natural for villains, notably Bauman in The Iron Horse (1925). When sound arrived he took up many of the same roles again in remakes, often in Westerns adapted from Zane Grey novels. He also appeared in Allan Dwan's Tide of Empire (1929) with Renée Adorée and Tom Keene. He died in 1938.
