Plot summary
Toby Grace is twenty years old and homeless in New York City when he wanders into a crowd of photographers waiting outside a building for K'harma Leeds. He fetches coffee for Les Galantine and two other paparazzi, then gets caught in the crush when K'harma's agent walks her out to a car. That night Toby turns up outside Les's apartment, admits he has nowhere to sleep and asks to stay. Les lets him in, and Toby offers to work as his assistant for nothing. Les takes him along on the hunt for celebrity pictures and later brings him to dinner at his parents' home, where they mock Les and his trade. Toby dreams of acting, and Les offers to shoot his headshots for free. K'harma invites Toby to her birthday party, and he agrees only if Les comes too.
