Plot summary
Bloom Towne is the small-town sheriff, and the Cavanaugh family, which owns much of the town's business, has long held sway over him. During a deer hunt, his teenage sons Nate and Skylar accidentally shoot Mayor Dick Cavanaugh dead. Skylar, still a minor, says he fired the shot to shield his older brother, and the Cavanaughs use their influence to have him charged as an adult. Nate, guilty and desperate, helps his brother out of the county lock-up, and the two flee into the woods. The Cavanaughs decide the sheriff cannot act impartially and send out a search party told to shoot on sight, while Bloom, who owes the mayor political debts, sets out to reach his sons first.
