Plot summary
After a charge on a German trench in 1917, a British company is cut off from its regiment and wanders in fog. The men walk for hours carrying Private Colin Chevasse, left paraplegic by a spine injury. They come upon a network of trenches and find three terrified German soldiers, who pay no heed to Private Willie McNess's calls to surrender. Private Thomas Quinn shoots one, another flees and the third, Friedrich, is taken prisoner. Believing they have reached the enemy front line, the men set about fortifying the trenches until reinforcements arrive. Rotting bodies strung with barbed wire and bayonets litter the ground, and the men's compasses and watches have stopped working. Charges set to seal passages draw a demon-like growl from the mud, and blood pours from it.
