- Lance Larson got the idea for Deadland after reading an article about a first-generation Hispanic US border agent whose parents were themselves undocumented immigrants, and was struck by the duality the man brought to the job; he quoted him: "In one hand I carry my badge and in the other my heart."
- Deadland was Larsons debut as a feature director; the thriller, which he wrote together with Jas Shelton, was the first feature he had directed.
