Plot summary
Sue is a librarian in suburban England, and her son Daniel is a teenager wrapped up in heavy metal and crisps. He is meant to fly to Florida for the summer to stay with his father, who has remarried, but the trip is called off at the last minute, and the two of them are left facing six weeks in the same house. Daniel shuts himself away with his music and tries to put a band together, while Sue makes awkward attempts to get through to him and pursues a romance of her own. Friendships and disappointments come Daniel's way as the weeks pass, and he and Sue keep clashing.
