Plot summary
Day is a figure whose outline frames a daylight scene, with a sun at the center. The events inside him are the ordinary events of a day, and they match what he feels, so a rainbow appears when he is happy. Night frames a darker scene built around a moon, and cheer reaches him as fireworks. When Day and Night come upon each other, neither knows what to make of the other. Each is dismissive because the other seems different, and the two of them come to blows. Hand drawn outlines hold the pair, while the scenes within their silhouettes are rendered in three dimensions, a mix of 2D and 3D animation.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The narration of Day & Night is the voice of Dr. Wayne Dyer, taken from a lecture he gave in the 1970s; Pixar honored him with a private screening of the finished short.
- The short's two characters were hand drawn and animated in 2D, while the scenes inside their silhouettes were rendered in 3D; a masking technique turned the 2D characters into windows onto a 3D world.
- Day & Night was Pixar's second short film to be partially animated in 2D, following Your Friend the Rat.
