Plot summary

At the Woman's urging, Darlin' leaves the forest and is hit by an ambulance outside a hospital. Filthy, wild and unable to speak, she is treated there and then placed at St. Philomena's, a Catholic boarding school where The Bishop, his nuns and the other students work to make her a proper girl. Tony, the nurse who first befriended her at the hospital, tries to keep watch over her, and the school repeatedly turns him away because he is gay. She is called Darlin' after the name on her bracelet. Her speech returns slowly, she befriends a troublemaking tomboy named Billy, and the school's lessons about the Devil frighten her. The Bishop sees fame and money in her, and the Woman who raised her means to come for her.
