Plot summary
Julie Hastings, an attorney, finds the Bellasarious Memorandum, a document showing that her boss, the developer Louis Strack Jr., bribed zoning commission members. Strack admits the bribery helped his plan for a new city and warns that criminals might want the memorandum. Julie leaves it at the lab of her boyfriend, Dr. Peyton Westlake, a scientist working on synthetic skin for burn victims. The material breaks down after 99 minutes because it is photosensitive, and Westlake discovers that light destroys it. Crime boss Robert Durant and his armed thugs then raid the lab looking for the document; Westlake is tortured and badly disfigured when the lab is blown up.
