Plot summary
Alice Bell earns her living shearing sheep for a farm crew she gets along with. Her father's death brings her back to the Yorkshire farm she fled fifteen years earlier, on the strength of what he had promised her about the tenancy. The main house stirs memories of her father, so she will not sleep in it. Her brother Joe is not there when she arrives; his greeting, when he turns up, is anger that she has come now, after all this time. He warms to her, then hardens when he learns she has applied for the tenancy. The land agent tells her the neglected farm must be put right for the application to succeed, and Joe resists her repairs, fearing they will upset the farm's balance.
