Biography

Sam Livesey was a Welsh actor whose career reached from the silent era into sound films. Born in Flintshire in 1873, he grew up in a touring theater family and performed at the Prince of Wales in Mexborough, which his mother opened in 1893. He often played figures of authority, such as the headmaster in Young Woodley, the dictatorial father in Maisie's Marriage, and various police inspectors and military officers. For Alfred Hitchcock he was the Chief Inspector in the early silent version of Blackmail (1929); Harvey Braban inherited the role for the sound release. Livesey also appeared in Moscow Nights with Anthony Asquith and in Alexander Korda productions, including Rembrandt (1936), Dark Journey (1937), and a brief appearance in The Private Life of Henry VIII. In the 1923 silent Maisie's Marriage, he and Roger Livesey took the roles of father and son. Toward the end of his career he played Mr. Tulliver in The Mill on the Floss.
