Biography

Charlotte Greenwood was an American actress, comedian, and dancer who began in vaudeville and became a Broadway star. Born in Philadelphia in 1890, she first appeared professionally in 1905, dancing in The White Cat, then performed in the sister act Burnam and Greenwood from 1909 to 1912. Oliver Morosco cast her in The Tik-Tok Man of Oz in 1913, and her role in So Long Letty and its sequel Linger Longer Letty established her as a star; she later repeated the role in a 1929 film. Critics including James Agate and Alexander Woollcott praised her stage work, and she introduced the Cole Porter song I Sleep Easier Now in Out of This World. Known for long legs and high kicks, she appeared in musicals and serio-comic parts, with her last memorable role as Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! (1955). She also had her own radio sitcom from 1944 to 1946 and recorded albums.

Charlotte Greenwood's professional stage debut came in 1905, when she was still a teenager, dancing in Ludwig Englander's musical The White Cat.
Big break
Morosco commissioned a star vehicle stage play called So Long Letty in 1916, and the part made Greenwood a star. She played the role again in the 1929 film of that title.
