Plot summary
In Los Angeles, paramedics Dean and Eric are called to a car wreck and load a dying man into the back of their ambulance. While they tend to him they discover a million dollars hidden in his clothing, and when he dies, the two of them decide to keep the money for themselves. Dean, who is set on keeping the cash, and firefighter Max persuade a hesitant Eric that the money is their way out of their struggles. Immigration agent Beckwith is looking into the money smuggling operation behind the wreck, and a ruthless enforcer named Craddock is on the paramedics' trail.

- Tom Everett Scott joined Danger One only two days before cameras started rolling; Bokeem Woodbine, Seann William Scott and Michael Rapaport were among the actors considered for the role.
- Damon Dayoub was first cast as one of the corrupt ICE agents, but when the filmmakers couldn't choose between Angelica Celaya and Julissa Bermudez for the role of Brie, they cast both; Bermudez took over the ICE agent role and Dayoub played firefighter Max instead.
- Before filming, director Tom Oesch spent a week choreographing all the fight scenes in the producer's backyard, but the tight schedule left no time for stunt rehearsals, so the actors had to learn the choreography on set.
- Most of the ambulance interiors were faked in front of three large rear-projection screens set up inside a warehouse that also doubled as the paramedics' headquarters.
- The warehouse that doubled as the paramedics' headquarters stood next door to a recycling plant, and its noise was so loud that a large portion of the film's dialogue had to be re-recorded in post-production.
- The screenplay was written in the aftermath of the Great Recession as an indictment of capitalism, about working people who fear an uncertain future in an economy they're told is strong, and it drew on the '80s and '90s buddy action comedies the director and writer grew up with.
