Plot summary
Lily transfers to Seven Oaks University and becomes the roommate of Violet, Heather and Rose, a clique who operate the campus suicide prevention center. The center's approach is to give out donuts and involve depressed students in tap dancing. Violet, who is dating Frank, explains that she looks for less attractive men because she wants to build up their confidence. She takes an interest in Lily's appearance and manners, and wants to teach her how to talk, how to dress, and which men to take an interest in. Violet also spars with Rick DeWolfe, who edits the student paper and whom she regards as arrogant.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Damsels in Distress (2011)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Whit Stillman pitched the film as "a movie about four girls in a dorm who are trying to keep things civil in an uncivil world", then took a year to write 23 pages; when production started he said 12 years was the right amount of time between movies.
- The cut shown at Venice was thought an R at first viewing by the MPAA, so the director and editor Andrew Hafitz made tiny changes in two scenes, including taking out the text for what "ALA" stood for, to make it clearly PG-13.
- Damsels in Distress was Whit Stillman's first produced feature since The Last Days of Disco in 1998; in between he moved from New York to Paris and wrote several original scripts that were never made, including one set in Jamaica in the 1960s.
