Plot summary
The first king of Aurea leads his men against a dragon that lives in his realm; they are killed, and the king is left at the dragon's mercy. Centuries later, Queen Isabelle proposes that Elodie, daughter of Lord Bayford, marry her son, Prince Henry. Elodie's father urges her to accept, because the bride price would help their impoverished people. In Aurea, Elodie and Henry find they share a wish to travel, while Lady Bayford, Elodie's stepmother, distrusts Queen Isabelle's motives and begs her to call off the engagement. After the wedding, Isabelle takes the couple to the mountains for an ancient ritual that recalls the bargain Aurea's first king struck with the dragon, which demanded his daughters as sacrifices, and Elodie is given to the creature.
