Plot summary
Marie Davis urges her reluctant friend Tionne Watkins to try out for a girl group that Ian Burke is putting together for LaFace Records in Atlanta. Tionne brings Crystal Jones along to meet Lisa Lopes, her rapper friend, and in January 1991 the three perform "Meeting in the Ladies Room" for LaFace co-founder Antonio "L.A." Reid and his wife Perri "Pebbles" Reid, who approve Tionne and Lisa. Backup dancer Rozonda Thomas spots Pebbles talking with her dance teacher, runs over and stuns the room with her singing. She meets Lisa, Tionne and Tionne's longtime friend, producer Dallas Austin, and the women bond. Rozonda auditions with "What About Your Friends" and is renamed Chilli so the group can keep the name TLC.
