Hugo Haas
Biography
Hugo Haas was a Czech actor, director and writer who appeared in more than 60 films between 1926 and 1962 and directed 20 of his own. Born in Brno, then part of Austria-Hungary, he trained in voice at the Brno Conservatory with Leoš Janáček and took up acting after graduating in 1920, playing at theaters in Brno, Ostrava and Olomouc before joining Prague's Vinohrady Theatre and, in 1930, the National Theater drama company, where his roles included Doctor Galén in Karel Čapek's The White Disease. He made his film debut in the silent Jedenácté přikázání in 1923 and directed his first feature, Camel Through the Eye of a Needle, in 1936. Settling in the United States, he became a Hollywood character actor, then from 1951 directed low-budget melodramas in which he usually played the male lead, among them The Girl on the Bridge, which he co-wrote and starred in. His final film, Paradise Alley, reached theaters in 1962.

Big break
Czech playwright Karel Capek wrote the role of Doctor Galen in The White Disease especially for Haas, who played it at the Prague National Theatre.

Haas made his film debut in 1923 as Notary Voborsky in the silent film Jedenacte prikazani, and twelve years later played the same role again in a remake.
