Melissa Stribling
Biography
Melissa Stribling was a Scottish actress in film and television. Born in Gourock, she was involved with the Ealing Studios Amateur Dramatic Society from 1945 and became a professional three years later, performing with repertory companies in Croydon, Worthing and Windsor that year. Her screen debut came in 1948 with a small role in The First Gentleman. She achieved her greatest recognition as Mina Holmwood, a vampire's victim, in Hammer Films' Dracula (1958), appearing with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in a performance seen as erotically charged. That depiction was described as a first in British cinema. Director Terence Fisher advised her on the scene, and Jonathan Rigby, in English Gothic, considered her a terrific female lead. In the 1960s and 1970s she made guest appearances on television in Benny Hill (1963), The Avengers, The Persuaders! and The New Avengers. Her last screen role was in Paris by Night (1988).
