Plot summary
Lord Asano draws his sword and wounds Kira, and is sentenced to die by seppuku. Rioters raid the Asano house that night for his belongings. Twenty days afterward, the Asano samurai gather and pledge revenge, but Ōishi Kuranosuke has them wait a year while appeals are made to restore the clan. He divorces his wife and sends her and their younger children to her father's house, spending his days with geisha to lull his enemies. In a second story, Tamiya Iyemon saves Oume as she is accosted on the road to a shrine, and wins the favor of her grandfather, Ito Kihei, Kira's steward. The Asano clansmen refuse his money.
