Plot summary
Aaron Franklin works as a videographer and needs money. An ad online offers a thousand dollars for one day of filming, with discretion requested, and Aaron takes the job. His client is Josef, who has brought him out to a cabin in Crestline, California. Josef says he is dying of an inoperable brain tumor and wants a video diary for the baby his wife Angela is expecting, a child he calls Buddy. Aaron starts recording. Josef's behavior makes him uneasy: a jump scare from a hiding place, a wolf mask kept on a closet shelf. The stories Josef tells about his own life begin to come apart.

- Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass built the film out of conversations and kept rewriting the story while they shot, screening footage to see what worked. The result, per Duplass, was several alternate endings and "10 to 12 permutations of each scene."
- Mark Duplass said the story of Creep was inspired by character-driven two-handers My Dinner with Andre, Misery and Fatal Attraction, along with his own "myriad of strange Craigslist experiences over the years."
