Plot summary
In 1950s Nashville, Hank Garland's gift on the guitar sets him apart quickly, and he becomes the city's most in-demand session player. Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, the Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley all ask for him on their recordings. He shifts without effort between country, rockabilly and jazz, and jazz players such as Dave Brubeck, Gary Burton, Joe Morello and Joe Benjamin take note of him. A small group of executives and musicians holds sway over the local studios, labels and unions. Arrogant and set on musical excellence, Garland runs up against the business and social order he finds restrictive, and against its racial customs. He belongs to the A-Team, the session players who work and socialize together.
