Plot summary
Ida Clayton is twelve and lives with her single mother, Elaine, in Oklahoma. Her father, Walker, is a man she has never met, and Elaine will not talk about him, which is part of why she dislikes rodeos. Ida fills her empty summer by slipping away to rodeos. The chance to travel the country with the Sweethearts of the Rodeo, a troupe of young women who ride and perform at rodeos, comes her way, and she takes it with Elaine's approval. On the road she makes friends with the troupe's managers, Terence Parker and his daughter Rebecca, and with the riders Kansas and Madison. With Kansas's new partner, Justin Wood, they help her search for her father.
