Plot summary
Jay "J.C." Horton is a Progressive journalist from America's White Anglo-Saxon Protestant elite, a man of wealth and fame who is used to having his way. He and his wife Julie live in a mansion on an isolated island during the First World War. In 1918 they hire Floyd Monk, a mysterious grifter who speaks with a Southern accent, as the household's cook. Monk is told to prepare vegetarian meals for the family and for the servants, and he pushes back at the order. When influenza reaches the island and meatless supplies grow hard to replace, Monk urges the staff to rise up and takes the mansion for them.
