Plot summary
Valerie Nguyen earns her living as a motivational speaker while keeping one habit out of sight: an itch on her scalp that she cannot stop scratching. The compulsion has grown stronger since her mother, Chi, died in a boating accident when Valerie was a child. Preparing for an international tour, Valerie needs her birth certificate, which means approaching relatives she has kept at a distance. Her Aunt Thuy points her toward her father, Sang, a onetime soldier who now lives as a monk and keeps the papers. Old hurts, her mother's death among them and Sang's years of addiction, lie between them. Sang shares a tale from his homeland: the Sanshi, a parasitic ghost that lives off its hosts and drives them to harmful compulsions. Valerie pays the story no mind.
