Plot summary

Gabrielle Chanel and her older sister Adrienne grow up in an orphanage in Aubazine after their father leaves them there. As young women in Moulins the two work as seamstresses by day and sing and dance in a cabaret at night, where a song about a lost dog gives Gabrielle the nickname Coco. Two older wealthy men take an interest in the sisters, a baron for Adrienne and the aristocrat Étienne Balsan for Gabrielle. She wants more than the provincial town offers and dislikes the frilled, corseted clothes of the day. She goes to Balsan's country estate, learns to ride, and begins making simple hats that the actress Emilienne d'Alençon admires.
