Plot summary
Johnny is a radio journalist, single and middle-aged, at work on a project that takes him around the country with his producing partners. They interview children and teenagers, asking the young people about their lives and what they imagine ahead. From Detroit he calls his sister Viv, and the two speak for the first time since their mother died of dementia a year earlier. Viv asks whether he can look after her nine-year-old son Jesse while she travels to Oakland to help Paul, the boy's father, who is separated from her and struggles with bipolar disorder. Johnny agrees, and he and Jesse begin to know each other as he shows the boy how to use his audio equipment.

- Co-star Molly Webster, who plays Roxanne, is a real-life public radio journalist and senior correspondent for WNYC's Radiolab, and the children in the film's interview scenes were not actors, their authentic responses to Phoenix and Webster's questions were recorded into the film.
- The National's Aaron Dessner and Bryce Dessner contributed to the score, with Aaron making his feature film scoring debut, and the soundtrack became the first album released by A24 Music, the producers' music subsidiary, a week before the film.
- C'mon C'mon's opening weekend brought in $134,000 from five theaters, and its per-venue average of $26,800 was the best for a limited release since February 2020.
