Plot summary
An authoritarian federal government is at war with secessionist movements, and Washington, D.C. is widely expected to fall to the Western Forces even though the president claims victory is near. Lee Smith, a veteran war photographer, and Joel, a journalist, plan to travel from New York City to the capital to interview the isolated president. Sammy, their mentor and a reporter, first tries to talk them out of the trip, then agrees to join them as far as Charlottesville, Virginia, near the front line. The next day Lee finds that Jessie Collin, a young aspiring photojournalist she met during a suicide bombing in New York City, has joined the group.
