Plot summary
Buck O'Brien is 27 and writes plays, though he still behaves like an adolescent. When his mother dies, he asks his childhood friend Chuck to come to the funeral. Chuck now goes by Charlie, works as a music executive in Los Angeles and is engaged to Carlyn. The two were sexually involved as boys, and Charlie acts as though it never happened. At the reunion Buck makes an advance, and Charlie turns him down, then returns to Los Angeles with an obligatory invitation for Buck to visit. Buck withdraws ten thousand dollars from his bank account, packs his car and settles into a motel in the city. He starts writing a play on a yellow legal pad, Hank and Frank and the Witch, and hires Beverly, a playhouse manager, to produce it.
