Plot summary
After his father died in a tractor accident, thirteen-year-old George McCray went to live with his grandparents, Bo and Cora, on their Kansas farm. His mother, Jill, is in Minnesota dealing with her grief, and George misses her. The family expects her back for Christmas. George feels needed on the farm, where he helps his grandfather Bo with the daily chores and he keeps his grandmother Cora company. He has also made a friend in Mary Ann, and he has grown attached to Tucker, a smart, friendly dog the family takes in. Tucker's owner, Frank Thorne, has landed in jail.
