Plot summary
Alejandro, called Ale, is a twelve-year-old street orphan in Willets Point, Queens, a neighborhood of auto repair shops, scrapyards and dumps. He sells chocolate and candy to train passengers alongside his friend Carlos, who tells him that Rob, an auto repair shop owner, needs workers. Rob lets Ale live in the shop. Ale's sixteen-year-old sister Isamar arrives and sells food from a van. Ale believes he can fix up a van that Carlos's uncle is selling into a food business for the two of them.
