Plot summary
In Rylstone, a small farming community, corn is the principal crop, and it is failing even though the growers try genetically modified seed and herbicides. The adults are frustrated by the lack of progress and meet in the town hall, where a majority votes to destroy the fields so the town can claim a crop subsidy from the government. Eden, a twelve-year-old orphan who is raised by the town's preacher, and the other children object to the decision. Boleyn, a local teenager, plans with her friends to put the adults on trial that night, and the group brings Eden into it.
