Plot summary
Ted and Susan Johnson leave Los Angeles for a six-month stay in Kenya, where Earl, their father, has taken a post at a NASA tracking station and Jean, their mother, runs a clinic. Warned not to wander, the pair slip out to a watering hole and meet Morogo, a Masai boy who herds goats. He shows them Kenya's wildlife; they teach him video games and sports. Morogo's father, Kipoin, dislikes the friendship and scolds his son for ignoring the herd. The children find a cheetah cub whose mother a poacher killed, and Susan talks her parents into keeping her. They name her Duma. A storekeeper, B. Patel, who had tried to buy the cub, later hires two poachers.
