Madge Bellamy
Biography
Born in Hillsboro, Texas, Madge Bellamy was an American stage and film actress and a popular leading lady of the 1920s and early 1930s. She began as a Broadway dancer in The Love Mill in 1917 before turning to acting, and in 1918 she replaced Helen Hayes in Dear Brutus opposite William Gillette. Bellamy made her film debut in a supporting role in The Riddle: Woman in 1920. After signing with Triangle Film Corporation, she broke out as the title character in Lorna Doone in 1922. At Fox, she appeared in John Ford's The Iron Horse (1925) and Lightnin'. In the 1930s she worked in Poverty Row films, including White Zombie (1932) opposite Bela Lugosi. Her last screen appearance was in Northwest Trail in 1945, and she returned to the stage in Holiday Lady in 1946 before retiring. She received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960 and died in 1990.

By 1925, Bellamy had "artistic differences" with studio executives. That year she turned down a part in the hit silent epic Ben-Hur, and she later blamed her fading career on choosing light comedy and flapper roles.
