Plot summary
Christine Clay, a famous actress, is visited at her coastal retreat by Guy, her ex-husband, angry about her divorce. They argue; she slaps him and he leaves. The next morning, writer Robert Tisdall finds Christine's body on the beach. As he runs for help, two swimmers see him and take him for the killer. The police arrest him; his raincoat is missing, and its belt was the murder weapon. He says the coat was stolen at a lorry station. After an all-night interrogation and the news that Christine left him money, he faints. He is revived by Erica Burgoyne, daughter of the Chief Constable. Facing trial and doubting his lawyer, Robert escapes from the courthouse and hides in Erica's car. He explains his plight, and she agrees to help him search for the raincoat he believes will prove his innocence.
