Plot summary
Mark David Chapman, 25, is anonymous, socially awkward and mentally unstable. A Beatles fan, he is obsessed with The Catcher in the Rye and its hero, Holden Caulfield, whose life he tries to copy. In December 1980 he arrives in New York, where his mind swings between paranoia, sociopathic lying and delusion. To cab drivers he claims to be the Beatles' sound engineer. Outside The Dakota, the apartment building where John Lennon lives, he meets Jude, a young fan, and behaves around Jude in a socially unacceptable way. He argues with Paul, a paparazzi photographer. The film's title suggests a 27th chapter of the 26-chapter novel.

- Jared Leto put on 67 lb for the part by drinking microwaved pints of ice cream mixed with soy sauce and olive oil every night. He said it was harder than starving himself for Requiem for a Dream, and the speed of the gain gave him gout and left him needing a wheelchair.
- Getting the weight off again was worse: Jared Leto went onto a liquid diet of lemon, cayenne pepper and water, ate nothing for ten days straight and reckoned he lost 20 pounds in that first stretch alone.
- Mark Lindsay Chapman, cast here as John Lennon, had almost played Lennon once before, in the 1985 biopic John and Yoko: A Love Story. Yoko Ono approved his audition and then dropped him as "bad karma" on learning his full name; twenty-two years later Jarrett Schaefer picked his tape over a parade of Lennon impersonators.
- Out of respect for Dakota residents who had been there the night John Lennon was shot, Jarrett would not film any of the Lennon scenes at the building itself, producer Salerno said. That footage was shot instead on a closed set at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn.
- In April 2006 an online petition group, Boycottchapter27.org, tried to pressure cinemas into refusing the film to stop the glorification of a murderer. Lennon's widow Yoko Ono said the film would hurt her and that she would rather no story were made of the man at all, though she sympathised with the actors, who need to work.
- John Lennon's son Sean Lennon publicly called the making of the film, and Lindsay Lohan's part in it, tacky, while adding that Lohan understood how he felt, that they remained friends and that he had no wish to hurt her.
- The title points at J. D. Salinger: The Catcher in the Rye runs to twenty-six chapters, so Chapter 27 casts the killing as a continuation of the novel the gunman was carrying when he shot John Lennon.
