Ethan Stiefel
Biography
Ethan Stiefel is an American dancer, choreographer and director who began ballet lessons in Madison, Wisconsin, at eight and trained at the School of American Ballet. He joined New York City Ballet in 1989, became a soloist after a year with Zurich Ballet, and was a principal there by 1995. He was a principal with American Ballet Theatre from 1997 to 2012, dancing leading romantic roles in classical and contemporary works. His honors include a silver medal from the Prix de Lausanne in 1989, a Princess Grace Foundation-USA grant in 1991, a Benois de la Danse nomination in 1998, and a 2008 Dance Magazine Award. He led the Royal New Zealand Ballet as artistic director from 2011 to 2014, programming new works and choreographing Giselle. He starred in Center Stage (2000) and its sequels Center Stage: Turn It Up (2008) and Center Stage: On Pointe (2016), and was announced in 2020 as the next artistic director of American Repertory Ballet.

Early training
While he was there, Stanley Williams placed Stiefel in the company's men's special class, and there he trained with Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Fernando Bujones.
A first
On July 7, 2012, Stiefel danced his last show as an ABT principal dancer at the Metropolitan Opera House, taking the role of Ali the slave in Le Corsaire.
Behind the camera
In 2004 Stiefel created Stiefel & Students, a four-week summer workshop on Martha's Vineyard where dancers aged 12 to 18 trained and performed with professionals.
Behind the camera
Stiefel was named artistic director of Ballet Pacifica in late 2005, but resigned in April 2006 after the company failed to raise funds for its new vision.
