Plot summary

The Great Eastern Federation and Europa have fought for fifty years, leaving Eurasia under Federation control and the planet polluted. Dr. Azuma presents Neo Cells, human cells he claims can regenerate tissue, found in the genes of a primitive ethnic group. Officials reject him, but Kaoru Naito of Nikko Hairal Inc. offers backing, hinting it could also help Azuma's wife Midori. Azuma's son Tetsuya is engaged to Luna, and they argue over his plan to join the military. Deployed to Zone 7, he is killed by a booby trap, and his body comes back to his father. When the Neo Cells are stimulated, limbs and organs restructure into humans, mutants who declare war on humanity. Tetsuya is reborn in an armored body.

Casshern was among the first feature-length live action films shot on a digital backlot, alongside Able Edwards, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Immortal and Sin City: the actors performed in front of a greenscreen and all but the simplest stage elements were added digitally afterwards.
The American region one DVD release of Casshern, put out by DreamWorks in 2007, was a full 24 minutes shorter than the original Japanese version.
For the Japanese actor Tatsuya Mihashi, who appears in the film, Casshern served as the last role of his career before his death.
