Plot summary
Gloria Davis comes to the Colombian rainforest with her brother Rudy and their friend Pat to test her theory that cannibalism is a myth invented by European empires rather than a real practice. On the trail the three find two natives killed in a booby trap, then meet Mike Logan and his partner Joe Costolani, who is badly wounded in the chest; Mike says cannibals attacked them. Gloria goes missing during the night, and Rudy comes upon a native village while searching for her. Because Joe cannot travel, the group settles into the nearly empty village and its remaining elderly residents. In New York, a man seeking heroin instead finds two mobsters hunting Mike over a debt.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Giovanni Lombardo Radice refused to film a scene in which his character slaughtered a pig; when director Umberto Lenzi told him "[Robert De Niro] would do it", Radice replied that "De Niro would kick your ass all the way back to Rome". A body double performed the scene.
- Cannibal Ferox's uncut UK video release around 1982 was banned under the Obscene Publications Act over its transgressive imagery and scenes of real animal cruelty, and the film spent years on the video nasties list.
- Ruggero Deodato called Cannibal Ferox a knockoff of his own Cannibal Holocaust (1980), while Umberto Lenzi insisted Deodato's film had copied his earlier Man from the Deep River (1972), which is often credited with starting the cannibal boom.
- Early UK DVDs of Cannibal Ferox were missing 6 minutes of footage that had been cut for the BBFC, and when the full version was submitted to the board in 2018 it still received 2 minutes of cuts to the animal violence.
