Plot summary
After oil is found beneath the Osage Nation's Oklahoma land, the tribe keeps its mineral rights and grows rich, while the law puts the money of many Osage under court-appointed white guardians. Ernest Burkhart returns from the First World War to the ranch of his uncle William King Hale, a cattle rancher and reserve deputy sheriff who presents himself as a friend to the Osage. Ernest marries Mollie Kyle, whose family holds oil headrights, and wealthy Osage begin to die.

- Leonardo DiCaprio suggested swapping his role from FBI agent Tom White to Ernest Burkhart, and Martin Scorsese agreed; the script was overhauled to shift the main perspective to the Osage community and to center on Burkhart's torn loyalties to his wife and his uncle William King Hale.
- Lily Gladstone won the part of Mollie Kyle after casting director Ellen Lewis showed Scorsese her performance in Certain Women; Gladstone and Scorsese discussed Catholicism on a Zoom call, Leonardo DiCaprio endorsed her, and the Osage Nation gave its approval.
- Robert De Niro suffered a quadriceps muscle injury off set and returned to New York City for medical attention; production still finished on time because his remaining scenes were filmed in June 2021.
