Plot summary
In the 1940s, Thurgood Marshall works for the NAACP, traveling the country to represent people of color he believes have been wrongly charged. His office sends him to Bridgeport, Connecticut, where a chauffeur named Joseph Spell stands accused of raping Eleanor Strubing, the white woman who employed him, and the press has seized on the case. Sam Friedman, an insurance lawyer in the city, is asked by his brother to help Marshall gain admission to the local bar, which he does against his will. Judge Foster admits Marshall but rules that he may not speak at the trial, so Friedman becomes lead counsel and Marshall coaches him with written notes, including advice about the jury.
